It’s Friday again! They must be sneaking extra Fridays into the week these days. I’m working on a slide deck and a Quizizz quiz for the Macaronic Christmas Hymn, In Dulci Jubilo.

Someone suggested an online lesson on the Medieval Pilgrim song “Stella Splendens”. The earlier plan was to look at “De Profundis”, which would be very sensible, but not very exciting. Maybe we’ll do that next week.

I had a look at an old archive CD from 2011 and found this PDF of Jesu Dulcis Memoria. 12 page PDF There’s the chant in square notes and modern notation.

So, we made it through the First Part of the Benedicite last week, and we’re pressing on to the Second Part, looking at terrestrial things. But first, let’s have another look at that Communion Antiphon for the feast of St Michael.

Firstly, let’s look at the Propers for the feast of St Michael the Archangel The parts that the choir looks at are: Introit Gradual Alleluia Offertory Communion The easiest parts are usually the Introit and the Communion antiphon.

We have a shorter camp this year, just 1-4 September. Father has nominated the Votive Mass of the Holy Ghost, which has lots of really great chants. My favourite is the Communion Antiphon, Factus est repente.

Confirmations are approaching, plus we have a Votive Mass of the Holy Spirit planned in the preceding week. So, the Votive Mass actually uses a more elaborate melody, but I usually go for this simpler tune, adding in the extra words in a psalm tone.

This term the online chant class is working from materials over at A New Book of Old Hymns Closer to home, however, we have preparation for things we’re singing at Lawson.
